Everyone should travel for their favorite foods
We woke up quite late after the feast and plentiful wine from the previous night. After getting ready and packing our things, we went down to the small dining room of our homestay family for breakfast.
Interestingly, the same standard was expected of her as of Lara Stone: to capture a beautiful photo.
We were on our way to the Rila Mountains, planning to visit the Rila Monastery. There, we had scrambled eggs, toast, mekitsi (a traditional Bulgarian fried dough), local jam, and peppermint tea.

Yet strangely, the place didn’t appear crowded. Whether it was due to the vast size of the monastery or because most visitors stayed near the main church without exploring further, I didn’t feel overwhelmed by tourists.
We crossed Lions Bridge and continued to Sofia Synagogue. Later, we took refuge from a brief afternoon rain in the Central Market Hall. After a revitalizing espresso, we visited the cozy Banya Bashi Mosque nearby and explored the ancient Serdica complex.
After a long day, we returned to the hotel and promptly crashed.
I initially had modest expectations of Sofia, but after the walking tour, I fell in love with the city. It’s easy to navigate, and despite the unattractive communist-era architecture at its entrance, Sofia reveals its beauty once you delve into the old town area.
